Natural stone is one of the most impactful finishes in a project, but it’s also one of the easiest items to unintentionally delay if it’s left too late.

At Marblous Group, we work closely with builders, designers and project teams daily, and one of the most common challenges we see is stone selection happening after key cabinetry and joinery decisions are already locked in. When this happens, it reduces flexibility and increases pressure on the build timeline.

Why timing matters with stone

Stone is not a last-minute selection. It requires planning across multiple steps to ensure a smooth outcome from selection through to installation.

These are the key timeline points that need to be considered early:

Slab Allocation: This is the process of reserving and locking in the exact slabs for your project. Once slabs are allocated, you can move forward with confidence knowing the stone is secured.

Fabrication Windows: This refers to the booked timeframe your stonemason needs to cut, shape, and finish the stone. Fabricators often work to tight schedules, and leaving this late can push key milestones back.

Templating Timing: Templating is when final site measurements are taken before fabrication begins. It usually happens after cabinetry is installed, so it needs to be planned around other trades.

Installation Sequencing: Stone installation must align with site readiness and trade sequencing. Coordinating install order properly helps avoid rework and prevents unnecessary delays.

Treat stone as a key milestone: If the goal is a smooth handover, stone needs to be treated as a key milestone in the build schedule, not a decorative finish chosen at the end.
